Greg Whipple, 54, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, comes from a long line of teachers. His dad was a professor in the U.S. Navy, and three of his grandparents taught school.

“So teaching has always been something that has always been on my mind,” he says.

But as a chef who graduated from the Culinary Institute of Charleston, he didn’t have the credentials he needed to teach within the school systems in South Carolina.

That didn’t mean he had to give up his hope of becoming a teacher, though. Instead, he put his degrees and his dream together and now teaches a culinary class at The Howard School. This school year is his fourth at Howard.

“I’ve always wanted to teach, so when we moved here, I thought, ‘What better way to use my abilities than to prepare the next generation of chefs in Chattanooga.'”
