Chattanooga broke its
Christmas Day precipitation record, but with road closings, interstate delays and flash flooding, the Tennessee Valley isn’t necessarily celebrating.
Signal Mountain Road is open again after being closed most of Friday afternoon because clogged storm drains were causing flooding across the roadway.
Tennessee Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn said road crews managed to clear debris from the drains by around 6 p.m. They were also concerned that the roadbed itself might be weakening in one spot but decided after examination that the highway was OK.
Traffic was diverted to the W Road as the only other way to get up or down the mountain from the Chattanooga side and traffic bunched up around the three notoriously narrow hairpin turns at the top of the road, with about 85 cars waiting at the top and another 50 at the bottom around 3 p.m.
