A Chattanooga police sergeant was relieved of duty and arrested Wednesday after a Hamilton County grand jury indicted him on one count of aggravated assault.
Chattanooga Police Department Sgt. Worlie D. Johnson was investigated by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office at the request of city police after an incident Oct. 6 near the intersection of Gunbarrel and Crane roads, according to press releases from the Police Department and Sheriff’s Office.
When detectives closed the investigation, they presented the findings to a grand jury Tuesday, and an indictment was returned for one count of aggravated assault, authorities said.
Johnson served in the Chattanooga Police Department’s neighborhood policing bureau, and he is now relieved of all law enforcement duties. The department seized Johnson’s city-issued equipment and patrol vehicle, according to authorities.
Johnson was arrested by Chattanooga police Wednesday and booked into the Hamilton County Jail.
According to online court records, Johnson is out on $10,000 bond and is due in court Oct. 24.
He will continue to receive pay and benefits for an indefinite amount of time, depending on how long the investigation and judicial process takes, Chattanooga police department spokesperson Elisa Myzal said by email.
