Steady growth and a crop of large new subdivisions are bringing hundreds of new customers a year to Hixson’s water provider, General Manager Greg Butler said Wednesday.

The Hixson Utility District has added an average of around 280 customers per year since Butler started in 2014, he said.

That’s ramping up — in the past five years, an average of 349 meters a year have been installed on new homes in the area, Butler said.

“There’s a lot of residential development going on,” Butler told the Friends of Hixson group Wednesday at Clear Creek Church. “If there’s a piece of land, it’s getting grabbed right now and getting developed.”

This year alone, 446 meters have been installed on new homes, Butler said. Now, the district serves almost 29,000 people — a far cry from the 25 original customers who formed the district in 1941.
