Hamilton County Commissioner Lee Helton, R-East Brainerd, says the country is not meant to have career politicians, and he aims to make that the rule for the county mayor and commissioners.

“It shouldn’t be a permanent position,” he said of the jobs.

Helton told the commission Wednesday he would introduce a resolution that calls for term limits — three four-year terms for the mayor and County Commission. If approved by the commission, the measure would need to be approved by the state legislature and then in a referendum by voters.

If all goes well, he said, the proposal could be on the ballot in November.
