I am writing in response to a letter (3/5). I have also experienced pushback from staff at the Chattanooga recycling centers. On one occasion I was asked to provide my driver’s license and proof of registration to confirm I was a Chattanooga resident.

Although I have curbside recycling, glass is not accepted. I take my glass to a recycling center. Since it is on my way to work, I drop off regularly.

Last week I asked about recycling Styrofoam and was told it could be recycled but only if placed in designated “orange” bags. When I asked if the bags were available at the center, I was told they were not and that they could be purchased at Walmart. I checked Walmart, Food City and Publix but was unable to find them, and had to order from Amazon.

It seems possible the cancellation of the Orange Grove contracts has contributed to these stricter policies. I worry it may discourage rather than encourage people from recycling.
