Suspect in triple shooting in jail

A Calhoun, Ga., man charged in the abduction and killing of his estranged girlfriend was released from a Chattanooga hospital Monday and taken to the Gordon County Jail.

Paul Buchannon, 39, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the July 29 death of Christy McKnight, 40, who was found sprawled on railroad tracks dead several miles from her home in Resaca, said Chief Deputy Robert Paris.

Buchannon was placed on high security in the jail and does not have a bond hearing set yet, Paris said.

Buchannon has been recovering at Erlanger hospital from several gunshot wounds after he reportedly would not lower his weapons when officers found him in the woods late July 29.

He faces more charges involving McKnight’s son and nephew, both of whom were shot at McKnight’s home before she was abducted, Paris said.

McKnight’s son, Dustin Henderson, 17, and nephew, Cody Adams, 19, were taken to a hospital, but Paris would not comment on their condition.

A police dog found Buchannon in the woods near Hill City late on July 29, and two officers shot at him when he would not cooperate, Paris said.

One of the officers involved in the shooting was Whitfield County Deputy Shannon Ramsey, said Maj. John Gibson with the sheriff’s office.

Ramsey was placed on administrative leave until the Georgia Bureau of Investigation cleared his name Aug. 2, Gibson said.

Ramsey completed a training process and talked with a psychologist before returning to work, which is standard procedure, Gibson said.
