An abandoned Chattanooga tower known for graffiti broadcasting the word “JUNK” over Highway 27 may soon be torn down and replaced with a modern seven-story commercial and residential tower, public renderings show.

The developer looking to redo Parkway Towers submitted renderings to the city’s downtown zoning panel before the developer seeks permission Thursday to build a seventh story. Downtown code typically allows only six stories for new developments in the area.

Atlanta-based KH Property Group, which maintains an office in Chattanooga, wants to revitalize the property at 1823 Reggie White Blvd. next door to Finley Stadium and First Horizon Pavilion.

Plans for the mixed-use tower include parking and 3,200 square feet of commercial space on the first two floors and one- and two-bedroom residential units on floors three through seven, according to the zoning request. The size of the tower would be 56,000 square feet.
