A program launched last month aims to help teenagers experiencing homelessness in Hamilton County.

Chattanooga Room in the Inn’s Unaccompanied Youth pilot program is designed to provide shelter, stability and comprehensive support for youth 16 to 18 years old who aren’t in the physical custody of a parent or guardian and experiencing housing instability.

The program is a partnership with Hamilton County Schools, and should help teens stay connected to school, build life skills and receive trauma-informed support while working toward long-term stability.

“Youth homelessness often remains hidden in our community,” Taylor Hixson, executive director of CRITI, said. “These students are trying to finish high school while navigating housing instability, trauma, and a lack of family support.”

The school district can identify eligible students for the program, and will begin work with 18-year-old students while applying for initial licensing.
