As tax deadlines approach, the pressure to “just get it done” can push even the most organized filers into rushed decisions. Unfortunately, waiting too long to find a tax preparer doesn’t just add stress — it can increase your risk of working with someone unqualified, unresponsive or even fraudulent.

Both your Better Business Bureau and the Internal Revenue Service warn that last-minute searches often leave taxpayers with fewer choices — and more risk. Here’s how to protect yourself, even if time isn’t on your side.

Don’t let urgency override judgment: When deadlines loom, it’s tempting to go with whoever is available. Take a step back and do at least a quick vetting. Check BBB business profiles for reviews and complaint history, and be wary of businesses with little to no track record or a pattern of unresolved issues.

Confirm they’re properly registered: Even under time pressure, never skip verifying credentials. The IRS requires paid preparers to have a valid PTIN. Ask for it. If they hesitate or refuse, consider it a dealbreaker. Credentials like CPA or Enrolled Agent can offer an extra layer of confidence.

Be wary of “fast refund” promises: Last-minute filers are prime targets for promises of quick turnarounds and unusually large refunds. While speed can be important, accuracy matters more. A preparer who prioritizes rushing over reviewing your information carefully may be cutting corners.

Avoid paying the full fee upfront: Those who are not reputable tax preparers may try to take advantage of the urgency in preparing a return by requiring full payment before any work is completed. While some upfront payment may be standard, be cautious of anyone demanding full payment immediately—especially if they pressure you to act quickly.

Insist on reviewing before filing: Even if you’re in a time crunch, never sign a return you haven’t reviewed. The IRS emphasizes that you are legally responsible for your tax return, regardless of who prepares it. Make sure everything looks accurate and complete before it’s submitted.

Have a backup plan: If you’re running out of time and can’t find a trusted preparer, consider filing for an extension directly with the IRS. This can give you additional time to file properly — though keep in mind, it does not extend the time to pay any taxes owed.

Watch for disappearing acts: A preparer who is hard to reach before you’ve even committed may be even harder to reach after. Clear communication up front is essential. If they’re not responsive now, it’s a sign to keep looking.

Overall, waiting until the last minute doesn’t have to mean settling for less. By staying alert, asking a few key questions and relying on trusted resources, you can avoid costly missteps — and file with greater confidence, even under pressure.

SHRED DAY

Our next Shred Day will be held 9 a.m.-noon April 11 in the Coca-Cola Bottling Co.’s parking lot at 2111 W. Shepherd Road in Chattanooga. (Exit 1A off of Highway 153).

We ask our event attendees to limit documents to three large trash bags (up to 33-gallon bags) per person. We prefer bags over boxes, which helps us move traffic more quickly. We also ask participants to limit hard drives to four per person.

Resource 1 Tier 3 Data Security also accepts many other electronics for recycling. Computers and mobile phones aren’t the only devices that capture and store sensitive, personal data. External hard drives and USBs, tape drives, embedded flash memory, wearables, old cell phones, networking equipment and office tools like copiers, printers and fax machines all contain valuable personal information and stored images. Feel free to drop these off at Shred Day.

Hamilton County Coalition will also have law enforcement officers on hand to accept unneeded medications for safe disposal.

Thank you to our event sponsors: A-1 Barricades, Chattanooga Times Free Press, Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Cumulus Media Chattanooga, Double D Piping, First Horizon Bank, Local 3 News and Sunny 92.3.
