Hours after celebrating the program’s sixth state title, the math still didn’t add up for Gordon Lee baseball coach Mike Dunfee.

The Trojans repeated as state champions when they defeated Vidalia 3-1 earlier Saturday in the deciding third game of the GHSA Class A Division I title series at Synovus Park in Columbus, capping a roller-coaster two days in which the veteran team look at times overmatched.

After taking game one 3-2 in 10 innings despite striking out 18 times, top-seeded Gordon Lee was dealt a deflating 10-0, five-inning defeat in game two of Friday’s doubleheader against the seventh-seeded Indians.

The Trojans trailed 1-0 in game three before scoring three runs, more than enough for the senior pitching duo of Brady Little and Kaden Ellis, who combined on a one-hitter as Gordon Lee closed out a 38-3 season and added to its stack of state titles from 1979, 1984, 2018, 2019 and last year.

“After the first inning, when we went K-K-K, I was like, man, I don’t want to sit through this again,” Dunfee said. “We had 30 strikeouts in three games, so how do you win two games? I can tell you, because we have gritty kids — but it’s all crazy to me.
