My thanks to the editors of the Times Free Press for the essay contest, “What is an American?”
It provided a meaningful way for area high school students to think about and celebrate our country’s 250th birthday. More than that, the winning essays provided your readership with a glimpse into the critical thinking skills and ability to articulate effectively of three outstanding young women, whom I choose to think of as representative of their generation.
As one who is often disheartened by the direction our country is currently taking, these essays have gone a long way toward restoring my hope in our future. My thanks to you and the contest winners.

Editor’s note: The contest was jointly presented with the Chattanooga Area Historical Association, which generously donated prizes for the winning essays. Check the Perspective section on July 4 weekend to read excerpts from more exceptional student essays.
