A contractor recently fired from the Chickamauga lock replacement project has informed the state that it will lay off 183 people in Hamilton County.

California-based Shimmick Construction filed a notice with the Tennessee Department of Labor that said the “permanent closure” will be effective beginning May 12 through June 5.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced May 8 that it was terminating its contract with Shimmick to get the project back on track and protect taxpayer dollars.

“The decision to terminate results from USACE (the Corps) holding the contractor accountable for failure to prosecute the work with diligence, maintain project schedule, progress critical work, correct quality deficiencies and manage project controls,” the Corps said at the time.
