CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. — Moments after his team finished off a 6-3 win, Stephen Graham was echoing the thoughts of most of the Dade County High School softball fans who made the trip over the mountain to watch Thursday’s game with GHSA Region 7-AA rival Gordon Lee.

Of all the strong teams Graham has coached in his 10 seasons in Trenton, this one might not have been the pick to complete a regular-season sweep of the state powerhouse Lady Trojans and, at the same time, clinch the region championship.

“This is, not to sell this team short, a bit unexpected,” Graham said after his team, which starts three freshmen, improved to 17-4 overall and 10-0 in region play. “We graduated five starters last year, including all my infield, so going into the season, we didn’t really know what we were going to be.

“We’re scrappy. That’s a good way to describe us.”

And resilient. The Lady Wolverines, who won the earlier matchup 13-5, trailed 3-1 entering the fifth inning Thursday before erupting for four runs, and they did it with a bit of old-school small ball.
