The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation positively has identified the remains of a 1997 murder victim whose body was found in Grundy County.
A man’s body was found in a burned car on the side of Altamont Mountain in Grundy in July 1997, and two men were charged with killing him in Humphreys County, Tenn., TBI spokeswoman Kristen Helm said in a news release.
But the search for his identity continued until this week when it was determined the man was 32-year-old Andrew Joseph Bluitt, originally from Michigan, Helm said.
Bluitt’s body originally was misidentified through dental records, but the TBI exhumed the body in 1999 and sent the remains to the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropologist Office in Knoxville, she said.
The victim eventually was identified after a sketch placed online led to a telephone call from the man’s sister in another state, she said.
