Workshop Monday brainstorms ideas for next phase of the Innovation District

More than two years after Chattanooga created the first Innovation District in a mid-sized city in the United States, backers of the 140-acre district in the heart of the city want to hear ideas about how to elevate the district to a higher level of economic success.

On Monday at 5 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Edney Building in the hub of the downtown Innovation District, a brainstorming session is planned to address the question, “What do you want to see in Chattanooga’s Innovation District?”

U3 Studio, a collaboration of U3 Advisors and CorneilCo, who have helped plan other innovation districts around the country, will be facilitating this public brainstorming workshop for interested persons who attend.

The Enterprise Center, the City of Chattanooga, River City Co., UTC and the Chattanooga Design Studio are sponsoring the planning process for the future development and advancement of the Innovation District. Mayor Andy Berke, who created the Innovation District in 2015 and got the city to paint the streets and put up banners declaring 140 acres of downtown an Innovation District, said the area already includes significant economic, cultural, commercial, place-making and educational assets.

The workshop will start at 5 p.m. Monday on on Floor Five at The Edney Innovation Center.
