Work has resumed on the ash removal from the Emory River in Kingston after work was halted following a series of worker accidents, TVA spokeswoman Barbara Martocci said today.
TVA contractors went back to work dredging ash from the river late Thursday after a 2-day stand-down of all work while crews evaluated safety procedures. A contract worker at TVA’s Kingston Fossil Plant was seriously injured Tuesday in a fall from a piece of equipment used to filter solids from coal ash sludge.
Since the cleanup began in December 2008, TVA has recorded 11 worker injuries in which employees lost time on the job, in addition to eight other recordable but less severe accidents and 28 cases in which first aid was administered, Ms. Martocci said.
TVA is removing more than 3 million cubic yards of coal ash that spilled into the Emory River in late 2008 from the Kingston coal plant.
