An apparent printer fire caused the Hixson Kmart to be evacuated Sunday.
No one was injured, but six companies from the Chattanooga Fire Department responded to the scene at 5380 Highway 153.
Fire was not visible from the outside of the store, according to a news release from the fire department, but smoke was building up in a printing room near the front of the store.
There was “substantial” smoke damage to the store, although the fire was contained to the printing room.
The cause of the fire was ruled accidental, but battalion chief Don Bowman said the fire appeared to have originated from a printer.
The fire department says the store manager pegged the dollar loss at $1 million, with most of the cost attributed to clothes and other merchandise damaged by smoke.
Last week a fire evacuated the Best Buy store in Hixson.
