TO DO SUNDAY

* Remember Ed Johnson: Four days of events marking the dedication of a permanent memorial to the Black man who was lynched on the Walnut Street Bridge in 1906 will culminate Sunday. Four programs are scheduled; registration is not required to attend.

– 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. “The Tomb of Ed Johnson and the Resurrection of Christ” on the Hamilton County Courthouse lawn, 625 Georgia Ave. As Johnson awaited execution, his final wish was to go to church one last time. Leaving the jail was impossible, so the Rev. E.B. Fleming brought the church to him.

– 3-4:30 p.m. Dedication and unveiling of the memorial, south end of the Walnut Street Bridge, 1 Walnut St. Using storytelling and performance art, the dedication will honor Johnson’s legacy and that of his attorneys, Noah Parden and Styles Hutchins. Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr., the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and chairman of its Center for African American Studies and Department of African American Studies, will give the keynote address. After the unveiling, participants will walk across the Walnut Street Bridge.
