All about Cam
The Cam Newton story continue to spin toward warp speed Wednesday. After the latest allegations last night on ESPN.com, the SEC football coaches had their weekly teleconference Wednesday afternoon.
Florida’s Urban Meyer and Dan Mullen of Mississippi State were not inclined to speak of the allegations, and Auburn’s Gene Chizik briefly addressed it in his opening statement saying Newton was going to play Saturday against Georgia.
This was in contrast to wild internet reports that claimed Newton was going to be suspended later in the day. The rumors gained enough steam to cause odds-makers to take the Auburn-Georgia game off the betting boards in Las Vegas for a period of time Wednesday.
Yankees making moves
Apparently making the playoffs is not enough for the New York Yankees. The Yankees were reportedly meeting with free agent pitcher Cliff Lee on Wednesday afternoon.
Reports have Brian Cashman traveling to Arkansas to court Lee, the baseball’s top free agent and a left-hander that gave the the Yankees fits this year.
As always, price is no object for the Yankees, who may be one of the few teams in the league that could meet Lee’s anticipated $160-plus-million contract. Lee is expected to seek something similar to the seven-year, $161-million deal that C.C.Sabathia got – from the New York Yankees.
Two other points of injury interest
Not all of the SEC teleconference was Cam Newton related. Two key offensive players that have been battling injuries and are in games of high interest around these parts were discussed Wednesday.
Alabama coach Nick Saban said running back Trent Richardson, who hurt his knee last week, was being evaluated and said his sophomore runner was doing better.
Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said similar things about quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who suffered a concussion last week.
Alabama hosts Mississippi State on Saturday, and Ole Miss goes to Knoxville to face the University of Tennessee.
