It wasn’t supposed to be that way, or at least many thought so. Peyton Manning, famed as a former University of Tennessee football quarterback, was expected to lead the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl victory over the upstart New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
But instead, according to words reminiscent of the famous old spiritual that is always featured at New Orleans’ Mardi Gras and elsewhere, “the Saints came marching in.”
Quarterback Manning and his Colts got off to a comfortable early start, 10-0. But the game soon became very competitive. In the second half came that surprise onside kick that set the Saints on their comeback march. Saints cornerback Tracy Porter took off on a 74-yard touchdown run. Saints quarterback Drew Brees repeatedly hit his targets.
So there was a surprise ending — to some. The Saints’ 31-17 victory set off a big celebration in New Orleans, where the folks are still trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina’s devastation.
The Super Bowl was surely “super” this year — for the Saints and their fans. It was a big disappointment to the Colts. No question about it, this time the Saints had Super-iority!
