Culture & Couture, a gallery opened in Signal Mountain last November by Signal resident Sarah Campbell, is hosting its first events starting this month.
The first is a talk by Elena Burykina, who will speak about her work featured in the gallery as well as her technique. Attendees can enjoy refreshments as they check out the gallery during the event, which is set for Saturday, March 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Burykina was previously an architect in her native country, Ukraine, where her school of architecture offered fine art classes. She began working as an artist full time after moving to downtown Chattanooga, said Campbell.
She said she was drawn to Burykina’s portrait paintings, and commissioned her to paint one of her children.
“She’s extremely versatile in her style,” said Campbell, once a portrait artist herself. “There’s so much life in them. It’s extremely difficult to capture the personality; sometimes only the parent can see that.”
Next up is a pop-up gallery at Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club called “A Room with a View.” Campbell held a similar event at the club several years ago, before opening Culture & Couture.
“It was a nice event, and I got to meet a bunch of people interested in art,” she said.
Holding the pop-up at the club gives her the opportunity to showcase more works from her favorite local artists than at the gallery, which is located in a small space in the Signal Crossing shopping center. Held in the club’s ballroom, the event is set for Friday, March 23 from 6-9 p.m. It is open to nonmembers and includes a cash bar.
Featured artists include Burykina, Jim Tucker, ceramics artist Chris Tanis, and Signal residents Caleb Goggans, photographer Kevin Livingood and jewelry artist Amy Speek.
To see some of the gallery’s artists in action, stop by Culture & Couture Saturday, April 7 from noon to 2 p.m., when portrait artist Abigail Wetmore will be doing quick portrait sketches for $10 a person. Or, check out a free landscape demonstration with renowned artist Caleb Goggans Saturday, April 14 from 1-4 p.m.
For those who like a more interactive learning experience, Campbell is teaching an introduction to drawing class at the gallery Tuesdays, May 1, 8 and 15 from 10-12:30 p.m. The focus of the class is on figurative work and anatomy, and the cost is $20 per session or $45 for all three classes.
Campbell’s talents also stretch beyond the arts, and she’ll be leading a flow yoga class at the gallery Thursdays, May 3, 10 and 17 from 10-11 a.m. The cost is $10 per class.
