Despite their increasing economic power, women make up only 8.3 percent of the 618 corporate directors in Tennessee at a time when they also make up 51.9 percent of Tennessee’s work force.

And not a single publicly traded company in Tennessee has a female CEO, according to a state report.

A Lipscomb University College of Business report released earlier this year tallied Tennessee figures that show the state ranks last and next to last in a national census of women on corporate boards.

“It’s not good that we’re last,” said Vicky Gregg, the CEO of private, nonprofit BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee – a large company, but not a public corporation. “It still seems hard for women to make their way to the top.”
