Ross Grosvenor was overlooked last weekend when Baylor won two of three games at Battle Ground Academy. The freshman pitched but was part of a Wildcats staff that was subjected to one of those offensive eruptions for which Baylor is renowned.
“I don’t remember anything remarkable. We were surprised when we found out he was pitching today,” Baylor coach Gene Etter said Saturday after Grosvenor and BGA beat his Red Raiders 12-0.
Grosvenor was remarkable, holding the Red Raiders’ potent lineup to a meager four hits. The victory pushed BGA into a three-game series against Brentwood Academy beginning Thursday and ended Baylor’s season at 16-17.
It is the Red Raiders’ first losing season since 1986, when they also finished a game under .500. In those 24 seasons in between, Baylor won 14 region championships, 12 league titles and two state crowns. They also had two state-runner-up finishes.
“It was just their day,” Etter said. “Their pitcher, compared to what we had seen before, was able to get his off-speed pitches over a high percentage of the time, and they made several good plays defensively.”
