Cooler temperatures and music will draw a huge crowd at the Chattanooga Market this Sunday, said Paul Smith, general manager.
This week’s theme is Mountain View Bluegrass.
“Chattanooga loves its bluegrass,” Smith said. “It has always been a strong day in attendance. Some of our largest music crowds come out for this. We have chairs, but many people bring their own to make sure they get a good seat.”
Bluegrass offers down-home flavor to a down-home market, he said.

“The music just seems to fit the feel of market. It gives the pavilion a sense of everything as it should be, especially when Slim Pickin’s takes the stage – a great local band playing to a hometown crowd. Last year was fantastic. They put on a great show.”
It’s not a coincidence that good musicians will take to the Chattanooga Market stage on Sunday, Smith said.
“Chris Thomas does all the music booking for the Chattanooga Market, and now the Chattanooga River Market on the Tennessee Aquarium plaza. His extensive background and great reputation in music makes it easy. We get hundreds of bands each year that want to play the markets. The market is an easy daytime gig that lets them still book something for nighttime shows,” he said.
“One of the most challenging things is that we plan and book the acts during our off season. We get so many musicians that ask us in July if we have an opening in August. Sometimes it’s great bands that could add so much to the event. That is the hardest part,” he said.
In addition to Slim Pickin’s, an acoustic bluegrass/old-time/blues band, Steel String Session will perform along with singer/songwriter Jill Jack.
