Increasing safety – but also debt

We confess we can’t find anything in the Constitution of the United States that provides for the federal government to use taxpayers’ money to provide pay for local police officers – especially when the federal government is running $1.4 trillion in the red each year.

But it has been announced that a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice will be sending $4 million down to Chattanooga to hire 23 local police officers and support them for three years. (What then?)

Chattanooga already had hired 25 new local officers to be paid for with local taxes.

So Chattanooga should be better protected from criminals and safer with 48 more officers patrolling our streets.

But sadly, we will be in greater financial trouble (the national debt is currently $13.4 trillion) because the federal government will be giving us – and countless other communities across the country – lots of dollars it will have to borrow, adding to our debt and the mortgage on our children’s future, plus interest.

Is that the right way to run government?
