Ex-officer convicted in bribery scheme

ATLANTA – A former police officer in Georgia was convicted of charges he took money in exchange for providing information from a law enforcement database.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Monday that a federal jury in Atlanta convicted former Cumming Police Sergeant Nathan VanBuren of wire fraud and computer fraud charges.

A sentencing date hasn’t been scheduled.

Prosecutors said the 35-year-old VanBuren took bribes from someone he arrested in 2015.

Officials said VanBuren asked the arrestee for a loan, falsely claiming his wages were being garnished and his son had expensive medical bills.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said the person reported VanBuren’s actions. While working with law enforcement, authorities say the person gave VanBuren $5,000 after repeated requests for money and VanBuren unlawfully accessed a police database in exchange for $1,000.
