Volkswagen plans to unveil a so-called “Weekender” package for its new Chattanooga-made Atlas SUV that’s designed to show off its versatility and “go-anywhere appeal.”
At the Chicago Auto Show, the Atlas “Weekend Edition” will reveal features which will provide innovative cargo and entertainment options, according to the German automaker.
Volkswagen said the Weekender packages are a throw back to those offered on the classic Vanagon and Eurovan pop-up camper models.
The Atlas Weekend Edition features a modern variation of the pop-up roof – an urban loader cargo box. When empty, it offers a sleek, minimized appearance, the company said. When needed for hauling, it can expand to a 17.7 cubic-foot container.
Also, the vehicle features base carrier bars for attaching accessories for skis, snowboards, kayaks or bikes, according to VW.
Inside, a cargo divider provides a safe, pet-friendly barrier behind the second row so that pets can ride in comfort, the company said. The Weekend Edition’s second row also features a universal tablet mount that allows passengers to bring any popular variety of touchscreen tablet along for a getaway.
Many of the accessories will be available from Volkswagen dealers when the Atlas goes on sale in this spring.
