KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Knoxville officials are moving ahead with plans to reduce the through driving lanes on the University of Tennessee “strip.”
They hope to cut the through driving lanes on Cumberland Avenue by developing a three-lane street section including two through lanes, a center turn lane for left turns and wider sidewalks.
Cumberland now has two driving lanes each way and no continuing turn lane.
The plan is aimed to make it safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and those who ride city buses.
According to WATE-TV, the detailed design phase should be complete within 12 months.
