J.C. Penney will shut its store in Dalton, Ga., at Walnut Square Mall, according to list of closures.

The store is one of about 40 stores the retailer plans to shut down over the next year.

The closures, representing nearly 4 percent of the 1,060 Penney U.S. stores, will affect about 2,250 employees, according to Texas-based Penney.

Last summer, Penney closed its Northgate Mall department store, ending a 42-year presence in the Hixson market and putting up another challenge in the redevelopment of that shopping center. The Northgate store remains vacant.

Penney’s Hamilton Place mall store in Chattanooga is to remain open. It also continues to operate at Bradley Square Mall in Cleveland, Tenn..

Last year, Penney closed 33 stores and cut 2,000 jobs as part of its effort to return to profitability.
