Relationship Test

Following the Thanksgiving holiday, hundreds of thousands of Americans were diagnosed with COVID-19 – including me and my immediate family.

My partner, Jon, does not have the luxury of working from home. He was frantic when my test results came back positive. But each of Jon’s repeated tests came back negative.

To keep it that way, he turned a spare room in our basement – finished by the previous owners in the mid-80s but still very much a work in progress – into a fairly comfortable convalescent ward. It was no small feat. He even managed to set up a suitable workspace for me. And he did all of this after having stripped and sanitized the upstairs where we typically live and where my germs had no doubt already spread.

My 10-day quarantine brought on a sudden role reversal: He was the one who went to the store, who prepared the meals and cleared away the dishes, who kept the house clean (kind of).
