NASHVILLE – A building that was once part of the hosiery empire of one of Cleveland’s largest employers was been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Tennessee Historical Commission said the addition of Sanda Hosiery Mills, whose brands were marketed under the name “Humpty Dumpty,” was among five properties across the state added to the register.

Cleveland in the 20th century had a number of hosiery mills and industrial operations. Among them was Sanda Hosiery Mills with products including the “Famous Baby Bootie Sock.”

Sanda commenced operations around 1926, the commission said in a news release, with the construction of two brick buildings originally used as warehouses. By 1940, the buildings were part of Cherokee Knitting Mills and connected to larger industrial buildings. Sanda operated in the city in the 1940s and by 1950 was located in the still-existing complex.

Mill production ceased in 2000. According to the commission, there are local plans to re-use the complex using preservation tax incentives.

The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. It is part of a nationwide program that coordinates and supports efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic resources. The Tennessee Historical Commission, as the State Historic Preservation Office, administers the program in Tennessee.

Other buildings just added to the list are:

  • Bethel Methodist Church – Morristown/Hamblen County
  • Oaklawn Garden – Germantown/Shelby County
  • Sterick North Garage and Hotel – Memphis/Shelby County
  • Bozo’s Hot Pit Bar-B-Que – Mason/Tipton County
