WHAT IS AYP?Adequate yearly progress is an annual measure of student participation and achievement. States may set up their own standards and assessments but must meet standards in three areas: test participation in math and reading/English language arts; academic performance on state assessments in math and reading/English language arts; and another indicator, which for high schools must be graduation rate.ELSEWHERE IN THE REGIONAll schools in the Trion City system in Chattooga County, the Calhoun City system in Gordon County and Gordon County Schools made AYP for 2010. State records show Dalton Public Schools’ Roan Elementary has made AYP for 12 consecutive years.
Five of the seven area school systems in Northwest Georgia missed federal adequate yearly progress benchmarks on Georgia’s 2010 Report Card, according to preliminary results.
The systems also had more schools that missed AYP goals, the results show.
Every school in Chickamauga’s and Dalton’s systems made AYP standards. In Murray County Schools, Murray County High missed the mark and caused the system to miss AYP goals too, records show.
But Catoosa, Dade, Walker and Whitfield did not meet system AYP goals and the number of schools missing federal targets was larger than last year’s.
