Radio Birdman was one of the most important independent rock bands in Australia for many years, inspiring such acts as Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil, which went on to international fame.

“Descent Into the Maelstrom” is the documentary based on the band’s history. They were billed as the “loudest band in the land,”and the film will have a special screening tonight from 7 to 10 p.m as part of the monthly Sunday Slashers series at the Palace Theater, 818 Georgia Ave.

The film, like the band, was an independent project. It features interviews with all of the surviving band members, including a look at the internal strife, as well as rare archival footage and music.

“We are really lucky to be getting this,” says Sunday Slashers founder Justin Savage. “I started reaching out to the director before it was even finished.”

Sunday Slashers meets once a month at the Palace Theater to screen rare and independent films, often with guest appearances by the featured film’s cast members, writer or director. Savage says director Jonathan Sequeira is traveling, screening the film, and couldn’t be in Chattanooga, “but he is really excited for us to show it.”
