Walking advocate speaks

A nationally renowned walking advocate will pedal her message in LaFayette, Ga., today.

Mary Collins, an author and speaker with a track record of helping people get off their couches, will conclude her presentation by urging her audience to join her on a stroll around downtown. The free program will start at 3:30 p.m. in the gazebo at Joe Stock Memorial Park, 208-B N. Main St. In the event of inclement weather, she will speak at LaFayette City Hall, 207 S. Duke St., and the walk will be canceled.

Collins’ presentation is sponsored by Bike! Walk! Northwest Georgia and is part of LaFayette’s activities associated with “City Life,” the theme for 2011 Georgia Cities Week.

Incorporating physical activity into one’s lifestyle is more successful than a gym membership, she says. Her book, “American Idle: A Journey Through Our Sedentary Culture” is the result of her research into why so many Americans choose not to be physically active and the consequences of their choice.

Her book garnered the grand prize for nonfiction at the 2010 Indie Book Awards and Best Nonfiction Book of 2010 at the American Independent Book Awards.
