Write smarter on air pollution and more letters to the editors

Chattanooga deserves an “A,” not a “D,” for effort for air pollution control.

Please ask your writers, as Andy Sher did, to consult Bob Colby for air quality, not the lung association. The American Lung Association’s analysis is not what counts with EPA, TDEC or Chattanooga’s air board.

For 49 years I have supplied in Tennessee numerous air pollution collectors. Your recent other writers on air pollution articles might want to join the nonprofit Air and Waste Management Association to learn the latest in air pollution control research. A recent article on TDEC being “too cozy” is off base.

I recommend you encourage these writers pay an admission to attend the next TDEC Environmental Show of the South or the CRMA Environmental Summit this fall in Chattanooga to learn facts on air pollution control.

I would not fault TDEC for moving next year’s 1,200-person conference back to Gatlinburg after your writers’ derogatory remarks. I have worked with TDEC and TOSHA for decades and found them to be fair, honest, level-headed engineers and attorneys.

Incidentally, the Chattanooga Regional Manufacturers Association will be sponsoring the “Environmental, Health and Safety Summit” here this fall.

No, don’t plant ivy at brick wall base

In the June 14 Times, the “Do Just One Thing” column advised planting ivy at the base of a brick wall for the purpose of cooling the house. Do not do this!

Ivy tentacles work their way quickly into the mortar between the bricks, causing spaces for water and more tentacles to get into. Ultimately, the mortar will disintegrate and fall out. The whole wall might have to be re-tuck-pointed!

Disconnect viewed in education funds

Large billboard viewed from I-24 West at Moccasin Bend: “Tennessee Lottery: $5 Billion for Education!”

Headline in TFP: “Hamilton County Officials Consider Tax Increase to Cover Proposed School Budget Increase.”

Anyone else see the disconnect here?

Can we really believe anything Trump says?

Did I actually read that right? Did you really print that?

The Chattanooga Free Press editorial published on Saturday (Trafficking in foreign ‘dirt’) made me rub my eyes and gave me a headache.

Yes, as a citizen of this country, I do expect to take the president of the United States literally! My take on this issue is simple: If Trump says “fake media,” it’s true, but if he says “he would listen” to dirt provided by a foreign source, it’s false? Help me out here. When is Trump telling the truth? What are we, the American people, to believe?

No, I must disagree with the editorial page editor. Trump’s job is not to be the center of attention; it is to be president of the good old USA! I don’t believe anyone voted in 2016 for “Entertainer-in-Chief.” Reagan is rolling in his grave. God save us.
