Boyd Buchanan’s football team got the breakthrough win it needed Friday night, and it was due in no small part to a ground attack led by junior Jack Ferguson.

The 5-foot-8, 190-pound running back proved big enough for the moment against state-ranked Christian Academy of Knoxville, rushing for a career-high 214 yards on 19 carries while helping the Buccaneers rally to a 36-35 victory over the No. 2 team in TSSAA Division II-AA.

Ferguson produced several big plays, including gains of 48 and 30 yards against a defense that entered the night allowing less than 15 points per game. Boyd Buchanan finished the victory with 298 rushing yards to shake off back-to-back losses, improve to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in DII-AA East Region competition, and deal the Warriors their first defeat this season.

“This was a major win for our team,” Ferguson said. “We really were solid in our preparation all week. I am thankful to Coach (Charles) Fant and the rest of the coaching staff for putting their trust in me. This win was big for us, but we still have work to do.”

The Times Free Press has selected Ferguson as its prep football player of the week after a performance that made him Boyd Buchanan’s first 200-yard rusher since David Green racked up 237 on the ground in a 49-28 win against Silverdale Baptist Academy on Oct. 9, 2025.
