Before defensive tackle Josh Freeman left Chattanooga on Sunday, the Creekside (Ga.) High School senior committed to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Committing right away wasn’t the plan when he arrived on Friday for his official visit, the 6-foot, 270-pound Freeman said.
“Honestly, I didn’t think I would,” he said. “I didn’t think it was going to be as good as it was. I didn’t think everything was going to be as nice as it was. Everything was pretty cool, the coaches were great and I really liked it.”
Defensive linemen don’t often lead their teams in tackles, but Freeman did this season with 88. He also had 10 sacks.
Freeman earned all-region honors as a junior and senior and made the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s All-City/South Fulton team this season. He said he had been speaking with Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Jackson State and Western Michigan.
Freeman said he was scheduled to visit Jackson State next weekend but has cancelled the trip. UTC was the only school he visited.
“I like the program and the way it’s going, and I like that it’s close to home,” he said. “My parents really loved it, too.”
Freeman was one of four recruits to visit UTC this weekend. National signing day is Feb. 2.
