Tornado fall 1-0 in final

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — In a game played on grass, a patch of dirt dashed McCallie’s hopes for a state soccer title.

Christian Brothers’ Corey Acosta ripped a shot from 30 yards out that knuckled toward the goal and skipped over the head of McCallie goalkeeper David Fine. That turned out to be the difference in a 1-0 victory that gave the Purple Wave their second consecutive Division II-AA state championship and eighth overall.

McCallie (14-4-3) had its nine-game win streak and 15-game nonloss streak snapped by Christian Brothers, who defeated the Blue Tornado in last year’s semifinal.

“I thought we worked hard and did everything we could to get our legs under us,” McCallie coach Tony Meyers said.

The Tornado played in Wednesday’s semifinal against Memphis University School in a game that didn’t end until 11:45 p.m. EDT.
