We’re living in an upside-down world

Are we upside down yet?

Enough! Get road in Hixson fixed
The deteriorating condition of Northpoint Boulevard between Highway 153 and Hixson Pike is a disgrace. It looks like it was paved by a pothole manufacturer.
If holes in the road become much larger, they’ll be big enough to swallow a small VW. And with winter temperatures, ice and snow just weeks away, they will be getting even worse very soon.
Apparently there’s disagreement over who’s responsible for maintaining the road, but it’s time to end the wrangling and decide who should make needed repairs before motorists suffer the consequences. The roadway, which goes past banks and other commercial properties, is more than an eyesore.
Avoiding the potholes demands the skills of a slalom skier, and they’re now an accident waiting to happen.

Williams’ columns a must-read
Walter Williams’ social commentary on the Free Press editorial page of the Times Free Press should be required reading for all school-age children and especially their parents.
Perhaps it would stir up more introspective thought and discussion of the real reasons for the social ills we face today.

Debate reaction spells disaster
For some time, in the back of my mind, I have had uncomfortable thoughts that our precious democracy is heading in the wrong direction. After last week’s GOP “debate,” those thoughts coalesced into unadulterated fear.
When debate moderators posed questions that an informed voter should know the answer to, Chris Christie accused them of being “rude.”
The studio audience applauded. Examples of a “rude” questions: Carly Fiorino was asked how she expected to run a country of 320 million people when she was fired for poor performance as CEO of a company with 302,000 employees.
Also, Marco Rubio was asked how he could determine fiscal policy for the United States of America when he was having such a hard time with his personal finances.
The candidates tried to wrest control of the debate from the moderators to the apparent delight of the audience. Comments were made about the “leftist media.” Is it leftist to ask pertinent questions?
It is my hope that TFP readers will consider another question: what is the first thing a totalitarian government tries to control (with the ultimate intention of silencing it completely)?
The answer, of course, is freedom of the press.

Speed enforcement needed on streets
We live on Spears Avenue near Bell Avenue on the North Shore. It was Halloween night and our home was decorated and the mountain of candy was waiting.
We were all bedecked in our costumes and our jack-o-lanterns were lit. The first children were beginning to come down our street. There was a drizzle of rain coming down; not much, just enough to wet the street. It was dusk, almost dark.
I was standing in the yard to greet the kids, wearing my cowboy costume and welcoming them with my goofy “Howdy! Happy Halloween!”
Then I heard the squalling tires of a car as it sped down our street. I shouted for the driver to slow down, but the only response was a pointed middle finger thrust out of his window and a shouted obscenity as he barreled by.
This is all too common on our street. I feel that we deserve better enforcement of the speed laws in our residential area.
There is currently a real danger of being hit and seriously injured or killed.
