Obama, Putin huddle on sidelines of Paris climate talks

LE BOURGET, France (AP) – President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin (POO’-tihn) are meeting during global climate talks outside Paris.

The two leaders hadn’t scheduled a formal meeting during the two days of talks but found time to huddle on the sidelines. Ahead of the summit, the White House said it was likely they would interact.

Their meeting was taking place in private. The White House and the Kremlin didn’t immediately provide details.

The U.S. had been cautiously optimistic about closer cooperation with Russia in fighting the Islamic State group. But those hopes were dampened after U.S. treaty ally Turkey shot down a Russian plane it said entered its airspace from Syria.

Obama and Putin last met a week ago at the Group of 20 economic summit in Turkey.
