In Tune: Theresa Andersson

New Orleans has long been known for its abundance of very talented and world-renowned jazz, funk and Zydeco musicians. That is definitely not a bad thing, because those musicians have helped define and differentiate the city’s thriving music scene. However, it is quite refreshing when an artist like Theresa Andersson breaks through and creates a musical style that crosses barriers and portrays a different side of the Crescent City’s sound, while still passionately representing the city that helped her catch her break.

Born in Sweden, Andersson first made her move to New Orleans at the young age of 18 to play the violin alongside singer-songwriter Anders Osborne, a fellow Swede. After playing with Osborne for nine years, Andersson left the band and became more enriched in the city’s music scene, recording with well-known New Orleans artists such as The Meters, the Radiators, Allen Toussaint, Galactic and The Neville Brothers.

Over the years, she released a couple of lesser-known albums, but her third album, Shine, brought her more critical acclaim and she was featured in the John Travolta movie, A Long Song for Bobby Long, where she also made a cameo appearance. Her original sound became more apparent on her next album, 2008’s Hummingbird, Go!, where she incorporated more of her talent of playing multiple instruments such as the violin, guitar, drums and dulcimer, looping the sounds in layers, which was evident in her homemade YouTube hit video for the song Na Na Na.

With the release of her newest album, Street Parade, Andersson seems to fine-tune her truest sound, keeping in line with the style of Hummingbird, Go!, but mixing more of a haunting New Orleans soul blend to her creative pop sound. Touring in support of her new album, she will make her way up to Tennessee, stopping in Fort Payne, Ala., on Sept 15 to perform at the DeKalb Theatre, then making her way to Chattanooga Sept. 16 for a live show at Barking Legs Theatre.
