A suspect charged with killing a man Feb. 27 at the Kanku’s on Wilcox Boulevard was given a 30-day suspended jail sentence and put on probation by a local judge just a day earlier.
His crime? Unlawful possession of a firearm.
Police now say Jamaal Byrd, 29, fatally shot victim Terrance Etchison and even was caught on video committing the crime.
Several witnesses to the killing convened in court Wednesday morning expecting to testify at Mr. Byrd’s preliminary hearing. Hamilton County Prosecutors also had hastily filed a motion to revoke his probation.
The hearing has been rescheduled for March 24,
The fatal shooting was the second in seven weeks at the Kanku’s, a convenience store that Brainerd residents say always has been plagued by violence. Police theorize that store’s location between two rival gang territories likely is what makes it a magnet for criminal activity.
