WASHINGTON (AP) – Washington’s police chief says four people were found dead after a housefire in an upscale neighborhood, and authorities consider the blaze to be suspicious.

Chief Cathy Lanier said at a news conference near the fire in the northwest section of the city that firefighters who entered the home Thursday afternoon found four people dead.

Lanier says the dead are three adults and possibly a child. She says investigators have not confirmed the identities of the four.

Firefighters were called about 1:30 p.m. to the house and brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

Lanier said there were no obvious signs of forced entry at the house, and officers will be canvassing the neighborhood to interview residents.

The house is near the Washington National Cathedral.
