The chicken is covered in melted pepperjack cheese soothed by the sandwich’s sweet slaw, and the Dijon mustard drizzled onto the melt enhances its already savory flavor.Significance:Just like this sandwich’s memorable combination of sweet and spicy, Chattanooga Golf & Country Club has gained local and national attention due to its unique blend of scenic locale and extravagant architectural design. This combination has not only made the facility the ideal venue for elegant dining and fantastic golf, it has also lured in golf legends like Walter Hagen and Arnold Palmer and secured the course’s spot as one of the top in the state.Cliché as it may sound, the saying “you are what you eat” is especially true for local country clubs. Each club has a rich history and culture unique to its community, and that culture is often reflected in its cuisine – or in this case, its sandwiches. We dropped by three nearby country clubs to find the lunchtime specialties that define the history, values and culture of these high-class social hubs.
Inside Scoop: While these sandwiches may be exclusively for club members, Lookout Mountain Golf Club caters outside wedding receptions, banquets and corporate events with referrals from members. So if you have a friend inside the club, now’s the time to cozy up for a favor!

Meet The Gooey
Price: $11
“You bite into it and it oozes out. Very rich. It’s not for the diet-conscious.” – Margaret Johnson, Chef
A longstanding favorite at Lookout Mountain Golf Club, this gooey delight puts grilled cheese to shame. The sandwich features special club-made pimento cheese wedged between 100 percent whole-wheat bread. Before grilling this beauty to perfection, the sandwich is sprinkled with grilled onions, grilled tomatoes and – our favorite – bacon.
Significance: With a strong emphasis on tradition, Lookout Mountain Golf Club boasts a well-documented history that stretches back to 1923. It should come as no surprise, then, that the club places just as much value on its culinary tradition. Created by head chef Big Walt Russell more than 50 years ago, The Gooey has become a traditional dish at the club. So much so that current chef Margaret Johnson remembers eating it when she was a little girl.
