Sheriff’s deputies found an unloaded handgun, two knives and a pair of brass knuckles on four Brainerd High School students this morning.
The weapons were found in response to a report of a person pointing a weapon at a school bus enroute to the school, according to Janice Atkinson, spokeswoman for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
When the bus arrived at the school, a report was made to the School Resource Officer that a student possibly had a weapon, according to Ms. Atkinson. The school was locked down while the SRO and other sheriff’s deputies searched classrooms and students, she said.
During the search, police found an unloaded .25 caliber handgun in the backpack of one male student and “large folding pocket knives” in the possession of one female and another male student, Ms. Atkinson said.
Another female student was found to have a pair of brass knuckles in her possession, she said.
The student with the handgun was taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with carrying a weapon on school property, Ms. Atkinson said.
The other students with weapons were released to their parents and a petition will be filed with the Hamilton County Juvenile Court to charge each with carrying a weapon on school property, she said.
Neither the names nor ages of the students were released by police.
