Q: Should I worry about flashes of light around my eyes?

A: Yes, as they could be caused by anatomic or inflammatory pathology within the eye. Typically, they originate in the back of the eye near the retina, the visually sensitive nerve tissue of the eye. Back here, the retina connects to the vitreous – the gelatinous substance that fills the eye. Over time, the vitreous pulls off its attachments to the retina, which often results in a floater. This phenomenon pulls on the retina, which causes a flash. If noticed, one should see an eye specialist urgently to be evaluated for a retinal tear or a retinal detachment.
