Wiedmer: Elite Eight is better with Auburn’s Bruce Pearl in it
It may well become the lasting memory of this 2019 NCAA men's basketball tournament.

It may well become the lasting memory of this 2019 NCAA men's basketball tournament.

The most memorable season in Tennessee men's basketball history ended with both a bang and a whimper.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - If you doubt that Tennessee needs senior center Kyle Alexander to be at his best come Thursday's Sweet 16 matchup against Purdue inside the posh KFC Yum! Center, consider his contributions to the last meeting between the two a year ago in the Bahamas.

While we wonder if the Duke basketball program will award national championship rings to the three blind mice in stripes who somewhat officiated their NCAA tournament win over Central Florida on Sunday, has there ever been a more predictable tourney than this one?

The Volunteers won against Iowa, all right. Won 83-77 in overtime after leading by 21 points at halftime and by 25 points, 44-19, late in the opening period.

Versatility, intelligence and unselfishness have been the Vols' strengths all season.

Tennessee junior point guard Jordan Bone breathed a sigh of relief late Friday afternoon.

In the beginning, when this season's record was still 0-0, before beating Gonzaga happened, and No. 1 happened, and those 19 straight victories happened, these Tennessee Volunteers had to return to their past to guide their future.

Times Free Press columnist Mark Wiedmer breaks down each region of this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament:

New University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football coach Rusty Wright isn't about to downplay how important his first spring practice is with the Mocs, saying of the workouts: "It's huge. It's going to set the tone for how we do things from here on out."
