Easter holiday weekend will see no highway construction

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Highway construction is being halted across Tennessee for the Easter holiday weekend.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said it has ordered its crews and contractors to halt work no later than 6 p.m. Thursday. Construction won’t resume until 6 a.m. Monday.

TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely says many families get together for the holiday weekend and officials want to minimize travel interruptions.

Lower speed limits in construction zones will still be enforced, but there will be no temporary lane closures.

People traveling in East Tennessee must still contend with road closures caused by rock slides on U.S. 64 in the Ocoee River Gorge and on U.S. 129 from Chilhowee Lake to the North Carolina state line. Travel on Interstate 40 into North Carolina is blocked by a massive rock slide just over the state line.
