Our ‘gadget’ computer age

Undeniably, we live in an age of electronics, computers and gadgets of many kinds. Some are important. Some are irresistible. Some are fun.

It seems the latest example possesses all three characteristics — and more.

Consider Apple’s new iPad.

What is it? Well, it is described as a “revolutionary” product — starting at $499. And on its first day on the market this week, Apple sold more than 300,000 of them!

The iPad is 9.56 inches tall, has an LED (light-emitting diode, if that explanation helps) display that is “backlit,” has a multi-touch screen, weighs 1.5 pounds, is just half an inch thick, and can be carried and used anywhere. For what? An iPad can page through Web sites, send e-mail, flip through photos, bring up movies and who knows what else, just at the touch of a finger.

If you have to ask much more, maybe you just “aren’t with it.”

The iPad is just one of many varied gadgets in our electronic age that are good for business, entertainment and many other uses.

Remember when handheld radios and small computers were marvels? Our modern age is moving fast, isn’t it?
